Civilian, two Hizb militants killed in Shopian encounter. Army officer commits suicide in Saichin

Srinagar: A civilian and two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in a gunfight with government forces at an orchard in Sugan village of Shopian district on Friday.

The slain civilian has been identified as Jasim Ahmad Shah son of Abdul Rasheed Shah of Malnad while militants included Hizb commander Abid Magray alias Sajju Dar of Nowpora and Hilal Ahmad of Armullah village in Pulwama district.

Official sources said that the personnel of 44-RR, SOG and CRPF, on specific information, raided a militant hideout in karevas falling in between Sugan and Kashva villages early on Friday morning. This led to exchange of firing between hiding militants and government forces.

Local residents who could be reached over phone said that the exchange of firing continued for several hours. Additional forces were brought on to the spot take on the militants.

The encounter ended after two hours of intense firing.

Three bodies were recovered from the encounter site. Two of them have been identified as Hizb cadres and the thrid one as “active associate of militants”.

In a separate incident, an army officer reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself dead from his service rifle at Saichin in Ladakh. He has been identified as Col Rohit Singh Solanki of 6-MAHAR regiment. It was not immediately known what prompted him to kill himself.
