Defying all claims and assessments, Junaid Azim Matto has been elected as Mayor. He defeated Congress nominee Ghulam Rasool Hajam with a margin of 14 votes. Out of 70 votes cast for the Mayor’s election, Matto secured 40 while Congress candidate got 26. Four were declared invalid.
Based on claims of the Congress party, this web portal had predicted the Congress win.
However, Matto proved all claims and assessments wrong when election for the Mayor’s post was held today.
Matto had resigned from the National Conference, last month, when the party announced boycott of Municipal elections, and contested as independent candidate from four wards, out of which he won in three.
Matto had the support of Sajjad Gani Lone besides BJP.
Governor S P Malik had announced before the elections that Srinagar would get a foreign studied Mayor, which many people believed was direct insinuation to Matto.
Belonging to a well-to-do political family, Matto has got his education in America.
Keen analysts believe that Matto’s win can herald Sajjad Lone’s entry into Srinagar politics.
Srinagar has traditionally remained National Conference forte. However, in 204 assembly elections, PDP dealt a serious blow to NC by winning five out of city’s eight seats. The brute failure of PDP in governance, the NC was hoping against hope that it could regain the lost ground.
However, with Sajjad Lone’s entry, the NC is likely to face more serious challenge.
