A pregnant woman was killed in a shootout between militants and security forces at Shadimarg in southern Pulwama district on Friday.
The slain woman was identified as Firdousa wife of Khursheed Ahmad Shiekh, a resident of nearby Qasbayar village. She was expecting a baby next month.
Police said that the incident took place when militants fired a UBGL grenade on a security formation at Shadimarg on Friday evening.
The security forces retaliated by gun firing towards the militant position. Firdousa was caught in crossfire and was hit by bullets.
She was rushed to district hospital Pulwama in wounded condition where she succumbed to her injuries.
According to family sources, Firdousa was pregnant, expecting baby next month.
Earlier around 20 people were injured in thrashing by soldiers at Trichal village in the same district in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
The soldiers traveling in a Casper had run over an IED planted by militants under a bridge at Trichal. The blast that shook the area over a radius of over 5 kms was followed by fierce exchange of firing between militants and soldiers. At least seven soldiers were injured in the incident with militants making their escape good.
The residents alleged that the army summoned reinforcement and launched house to house searches in the village during which they beat them up indiscriminately. At least 20 people including four women and a six year old girl were injured.
The residents alleged that the army men went berserk hit everything that came their way including the household goods. “They smashed window panes and doors and caused substantial damage to the houses”, alleged the residents.
