Private school teacher dies in police custody. Authorities close Awantipora Islamic University, Police seek magisterial enquiry

A youth from Awantipora in Pulwama district died in police custody the previous night. Identified as Rizwan Asad Pandit, he was arrested by National Investigating Agency (NIA) a few days back and lodged in the Cargo camp of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Rizwan was working as teacher in a private school. Police sources said that he was sought in some militancy-related case.

A police officer also confirmed the death of Rizwan and said that he had been arrested for questioning in connection with some militancy related case.

Inspector General of Police Kashmir Range SP Pani said that police has requested for magisterial inquiry into the incident.

“We have requested for magisterial inquiry under 176 CrPc to initiate the thorough probe to ascertain the actual cause of death,” the IGP said.

IGP said that police has also ordered a separate inquiry to probe the incident.

Meanwhile, in wake of the death, the authorities of Islamic University Awantipora have closed the varsity for the precautionary measures

GNS, a local news gathering portal said that magisterial inquiry under 176 CrPC to initiate the thorough probe for ascertaining the actual cause of death has begun.
