A high profile Hizbul Mujahideen militant Shamsul Haque, brother of IPS officer Inamul Haque, was killed along with two other associates at Shirmal quarter of Heff village in southern Shopian district today. The exchange of firing is going on two or three more militants are believed to be trapped inside the encounter area.
Shamsul Haq had left studies at Bachelors of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) at government college here in Zakura campus. His elder brother Inamul Haq is 2012 IPS batch officer who is posted in North East.
Soon after the news of an encounter spread, the locals mostly youth took to the streets and clashed with the government forces. Local residents reached upon telephone said that hundreds of residents of surrounding villages too have gathered at Shirmal and were trying to march towards the encounter site in support of militants.
They pelted the government forces with stones and forces retaliated by firing teargas smoke shells. However, there were no reports of any damage during the clashes.
Official sources have confirmed the death of three militants in the encounter so far.
One of the slain militants has been identified as Shamsul Haque of Sugan village. Samsul Haque, who belonged to a well-to-do Mengnoo family of Sugan joined Hizbul Mujahideen last year. One of his brother Inamul Haque is an IPS officer.
The identity of two other slain militants was yet to be identified. The operation is still on.
The clash took place early this morning after personnel of 44-RR, 23 Para and SOG raided a militant hideout in an open orchard outside the Shirmal.
Four journalists injured in pellet firing
Several people including four journalists have been reported injured in pellet firing by security forces on civilian protesters near the encounter site.
The journalists were injured while covering the gunfight.
They include photojournalists Waseem Andrabi, Junaid Gulzar, Mir Burhan, and a reporter Nisar ul Haq.
They have been admitted in the hospital for treatment.
