Srinagar: Six militants, two army men and a civilian were killed in separate gun-battles in south Kashmir’s Shopian and Pulwama district on Thursday.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) of separatist spectrum has called for general shutdown on Friday against the civilian and militant killings.
A fierce armed clash erupted between militants and government forces at Handew near Imam Sahab in Shopian district this afternoon which ended with the killing of three militants. One army man was critically wounded in the gunfight who later succumbed to injuries at Army’s Badami Bagh base hospital where he was shifted for treatment.
The slain soldier has been identified as Rohit Kumar Yadav.
A police spokesman said that the identity of slain militants was being ascertained.
He said that during the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the search party. In the initial exchange of fire one army jawan identified as Sepoy Rohit also sustained injuries. He has been hospitalized and is undergoing treatment. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter.
“In the ensuing encounter, 03 militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. The identities and affiliations of the slain militants is being ascertained,” he said.
“Incriminating material including arms & ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter,” he said.
“Citizens are requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” said police spokesman in a statement.
Earlier in a predawn operation, three militants were killed in a gunfight at Dolipora in Pulwma town. One civilian was also killed during the clash while another civilian (brother of the slain civilian) was injured.
Official sources said that three other forces’ personnel were wounded during exchange of firing with militants.
State authorities clamped curfew in the town following massive protests by the residents.
As the separatist leadership has called for shutdown on Friday, authorities have closed down colleges and schools as precautionary measure for the day.
