Eleven candidates have filed nominations for the Municipal election in three Wards–16, 17 and 74–on the concluding day of the filing of nominations. Today was the last date for filing nomination papers.
Informed sources said that the elections authorities have received three (3) nomination papers for Ward 16, five (5) for Ward 17 and three (3) for Ward 74.
The candidates include both independent and from different political groups as well.
Even as National Conference and PDP have boycotted the elections, some independent candidates who were earlier associated with these parties too have filed nominations papers.
The polling for the first phase would be held on October 8.
NC leader Junaid Matto today resigned from the NC to stand up in the elections as independent candidate.
Matto said that he resigned from the party in protest against the boycott of elections by the party president Dr Farooq Abdullah.
Farooq Abdullah announced boycott of his party in protest against the moves to tinker with Article 35-A of Indian constitution which guarantees protection to the state subject law under which no non-state subject can buy immovable property in the state.
Sources said that many more NC associates and workers are likely to walk out of the party to contest the elections independent of the party.
